Summary
CMS introduces new Place of Service code 27 effective January 1, 2024, for services provided to unsheltered homeless individuals in street/found environments. BCBSWY also eliminates faxed authorization requests effective December 15, 2023, requiring all submissions through Availity with limited exceptions.
Action Required
Immediately: Update billing software to include new POS code 27 for services to unsheltered homeless individuals in street environments. Train billing staff to use POS 04 for homeless shelter services. By December 15, 2023: Stop submitting authorization requests via fax, mail, or voicemail - use Availity portal only except for FEP authorizations not accepted in Availity, Availity system errors reported to Provider Relations, transplant services, and pharmacy authorizations. Ensure all staff know to validate provider directory information every 90 days per No Surprises Act requirements.
