Summary
Effective January 1, 2024, FEP (Federal Employee Program) now requires prior authorization for all hearing aid services. Only FDA-approved, prescription-grade hearing aids are covered - over-the-counter hearing aids are excluded from coverage.
Action Required
Immediately: Update prior authorization workflow for FEP members requiring hearing aids. Billing team must obtain prior authorization before dispensing hearing aids and include the 510(K) number, device name and model in all authorization requests. Verify hearing aids are FDA-approved and prescription-grade only - do not submit claims for over-the-counter hearing aids as they will be denied.
