Summary
Effective June 1, 2026, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Georgia is updating claims processing to align with Medicare standards for single-dose vial drug administration. Billing teams must now submit two separate claim lines when waste occurs: one line showing the quantity administered (no modifier) and another showing the discarded amount using the JW modifier. When there is no waste, submit one line with the JZ modifier indicating full dosage was used.
Action Required
By June 1, 2026: (1) Billing team must update billing software and claim submission workflows to enforce two-line claim submission requirements for single-dose vials with waste—one line without modifier for administered quantity and one line with JW modifier for discarded amount. (2) When no waste occurs, configure system to submit single claim line with JZ modifier only. (3) Providers and clinical staff must ensure accurate documentation of drug administration quantities and waste amounts on all encounters involving single-dose vials to support claims. (4) Update billing training materials and provider communications to explain JW/JZ modifier usage. (5) Review and audit current claim submission patterns for single-dose vial claims to identify compliance gaps before effective date.
