Summary
Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) is replacing multiple behavioral health modifiers (AH, AJ, HF) with a single HE modifier for services provided by non-physician behavioral health practitioners billing under a supervising practitioner's NPI. This change becomes mandatory for all fee-for-service and managed care claims starting January 1, 2025.
Action Required
By January 1, 2025: Billing team must update billing system to replace modifiers AH (clinical psychologist), AJ (clinical social worker), and HF (substance abuse program) with modifier HE for all behavioral health services provided by non-physician practitioners billing under a supervising practitioner's NPI. Update encounter forms and train staff on the new modifier requirements. Claims submitted with the old modifiers after January 1, 2025 may be denied.
