Summary
Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) clarifies billing identifier requirements: waiver providers must use IHCP Provider ID (not NPI) while all other providers must use NPI. This addresses a top cause of claim denials for waiver providers who were incorrectly using NPIs.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must verify provider enrollment types in Indiana Medicaid system. For waiver (type 32) providers: Update billing system to use IHCP Provider ID in CMS-1500 boxes 17a, 24j top, 33b and leave boxes 24j bottom and 33a blank. For non-waiver providers: Ensure NPI, taxonomy code, and ZIP+4 are correctly registered with IHCP. Failure to use correct identifiers will result in claim denials.
