Summary
Independence Blue Cross Medicare Advantage is changing how it reimburses STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) component laboratory tests. Effective 02/01/2026, when two or more STI component tests are billed on the same date by the same provider for the same member, the claim will be reimbursed as a single comprehensive STI panel code (87801) instead of individual component codes. This requires billing teams to bundle related STI tests or expect claim denials and reprocessing.
Action Required
By January 31, 2026: (1) Billing team must update billing software to automatically bundle multiple STI component laboratory codes into CPT 87801 when submitted on the same date of service for the same member by the same provider/group. (2) Providers and lab managers should review current STI testing protocols to understand which individual component codes will be affected (refer to Attachment A of policy MA01.006b). (3) Update internal billing guidelines and encounter forms to instruct providers that separate STI component codes billed together will be consolidated into the comprehensive panel code. (4) Ensure all medical records document medical necessity for STI panel testing; claims lacking documentation will be denied per policy. (5) Test billing scenarios in your system before the effective date to prevent claim rejections and denials after 02/01/2026.
