Summary
Independence Blue Cross updated policy 00.01.61b to change reimbursement methodology for Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) component laboratory tests effective 02/01/2026. When two or more STI component tests are reported on the same date by the same provider for the same member, reimbursement will be made for the individual, more comprehensive code (CPT 87801) rather than separate component codes. This bundling requirement aligns with CMS NCCI guidelines and applies to 11 comprehensive laboratory panels.
Action Required
By 01/31/2026: Billing team must update billing software to bundle STI component tests (reported on same date by same provider for same member) into CPT 87801 (Sexually transmitted infection tests / Infectious agent, multiple organisms) and deny or downcode separate component codes. Review Attachment A of policy 00.01.61b to identify all affected component codes. Update claim edits and billing rules to flag claims with multiple STI component tests on the same date for automatic bundling. Educate providers that individual STI component codes will not be reimbursed when reported together; only the comprehensive panel code will pay. Failure to implement bundling will result in claim denials or recoupment by Independence Blue Cross.
