Summary
Molina Healthcare California updated newborn billing procedures for Medi-Cal members. There is a 2-3 week delay before newborn IDs are loaded into Molina's system after birth, so providers must verify eligibility in Availity before billing and use the mother's Medi-Cal ID if the newborn's ID is not yet active to avoid claim denials.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must check Availity before submitting any newborn claims to verify if the newborn Medi-Cal ID is active. If newborn ID is active in Availity, bill under newborn's ID. If newborn ID is not visible in Availity, bill under mother's Medi-Cal ID. Never submit claims under newborn ID until it appears in Molina's system or claims will be denied for ineligibility.
