Summary

Effective January 1, 2027, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma is expanding the Medical Drug Benefit Program to update coverage for specific prescription drugs administered by healthcare providers in clinical settings. The policy establishes new coverage rules for therapeutic alternatives, newly FDA-approved drugs, FDA-accelerated approval drugs, and drugs with limited medical benefit coverage. This change applies only to commercial members and requires providers to verify eligibility, check prior authorization requirements, and submit exception requests through the updated Medical Drug Benefit Program process.

Action Required

Before Jan 1, 2027
Before January 1, 2027: (1) Billing and clinical teams should review the Medical Drug Benefit Program Summary to identify which drugs are now covered under the expanded program and which require prior authorization. (2) Providers must update eligibility verification workflows to confirm prior authorization requirements for medical drugs administered in clinical settings through Availity® Essentials or preferred vendor portals. (3) Establish a process for submitting Medical Drug Benefit Program exception forms for noncovered drugs when medically necessary. (4) Train staff on the distinction between covered medical drugs, therapeutic alternatives, and self-administered formulations that may be covered under prescription drug benefits instead. Failure to verify eligibility and obtain required prior authorization prior to service may result in claim denials.
