Summary
Effective July 1, 2026, Providence Health Plan will implement the Optum Emergency Department Claim (EDC) Analyzer to evaluate ED facility claims for Commercial and Medicare lines of business. The analyzer will review ED claims with CPT codes 99283, 99284, or 99285 to ensure billed service levels align with documented intensity, services, and patient complexity. Claims not supported by documentation may be adjusted to the appropriate level or denied.
Action Required
Beginning July 1, 2026: Billing team must ensure all ED facility claims submitted on UB04 or 8371 forms with CPT codes 99283, 99284, or 99285 and discharge status codes 01, 06, or 07 comply with EDC Analyzer logic. Providers should (1) verify ED visit levels are billed in alignment with intensity of services rendered; (2) submit complete and accurate diagnosis and procedure coding on all ED facility claims; (3) review internal ED leveling guidelines for consistency with national coding standards; and (4) familiarize staff with Optum's publicly available EDC Analyzer educational materials. Claims with dates of service on or after July 1, 2026 will be subject to analyzer review. Failure to align billed levels with documented intensity may result in claim adjustment to the supported level or claim denial per provider contract terms. Standard reconsideration and appeal rights apply to claims reviewed using the EDC Analyzer.
