Summary
HMSA will close and reopen certain Medicare Advantage plans for 2027, requiring affected members to actively enroll in new plans rather than receiving automatic enrollment. HMSA is introducing a new HMO option (HMSA Akamai Advantage Select Plus) on Oahu alongside existing PPO plans. Billing teams must prepare for potential changes in plan networks, prior authorization requirements, and member eligibility verification processes.
Action Required
Before January 1, 2027: (1) Billing team must verify current HMSA Medicare Advantage plan listings and identify which plans are closing/reopening for 2027 by checking the Provider Resource Center at prc.hmsa.com/s/article/HMSA-Akamai-Advantage. (2) Update eligibility verification procedures to confirm members have actively enrolled in new 2027 HMSA plans, as automatic enrollment will NOT occur. (3) Review prior authorization, network status, and formulary differences for the new HMO plan (HMSA Akamai Advantage Select Plus) and update billing software if it affects your service area on Oahu. (4) Prepare staff to handle member eligibility questions and direct patients to hmsa.com/Medicare for plan selection support. Failure to verify active enrollment in new plans may result in claim denials for members who do not re-enroll.
