Summary
Aetna has updated its EMDR therapy policy (CPB 0583) to cover EMDR ONLY for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. All other uses—including anxiety disorders, chronic pain, depression, autism, substance abuse, and 40+ other conditions—are now classified as experimental/investigational and NOT covered. Billing teams must immediately deny or reject claims for EMDR when diagnoses fall outside the narrow PTSD coverage scope.
Action Required
IMMEDIATE: Billing team must update claim submission rules in billing software to DENY all EMDR therapy claims (CPT 90832-90899 range) UNLESS primary diagnosis is F43.10, F43.11, F43.12 (PTSD), or Z86.51 (personal history of combat stress). For ALL other diagnoses listed as experimental/investigational (anxiety disorders, chronic pain, depression, autism, PANDAS/PANS, fibromyalgia, MS, substance abuse, eating disorders, OCD, personality disorders, sleep disorders, tinnitus, sexual dysfunction, and 20+ additional conditions), claims must be denied or placed on hold pending prior authorization denial. Providers must be notified via bulletin that EMDR is no longer a covered benefit for non-PTSD indications effective immediately. Update encounter forms and prior authorization templates to restrict EMDR authorization to PTSD diagnoses only. Claims submitted with non-covered diagnoses will result in automatic denial and patient liability.
