Summary

Effective January 1, 2027, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma will expand use of ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) Criteria 4.0 for medical necessity reviews of behavioral health and substance abuse services to include adolescents, in addition to the current use for adults. This changes the clinical criteria framework used for prior authorization decisions in these service categories.

Action Required

Before Jan 1, 2027
By December 31, 2026: Billing and prior authorization staff must familiarize themselves with ASAM Criteria 4.0 for adolescent behavioral health and substance abuse services. Providers should review updated clinical criteria through Availity Essentials (Payer Spaces > BCBSOK > Resources tab > American Society of Addiction Medicine Criteria link). Update any internal documentation or reference materials to reflect that adolescent behavioral health claims will now be evaluated using ASAM 4.0 criteria. Ensure clinical staff understand the multidimensional assessment emphasis and integrated care requirements under the new framework. No immediate billing system changes are required, but staff must be prepared to support providers submitting prior authorization requests for adolescent services under the new criteria starting January 1, 2027.
