Summary
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK) has issued a reminder that BlueHPN® (Blue High-Performance Network) is an EPO plan where members have coverage ONLY when using in-network providers, except in emergencies. Billing teams must verify member eligibility through Availity before rendering care and remind members to use in-network providers to avoid out-of-pocket costs. Claims should be filed using the same procedures as BlueCard® programs.
Action Required
Immediately: (1) Billing and front desk staff must verify BlueHPN member eligibility and benefits through Availity Essentials BEFORE rendering care or services. (2) When referring BlueHPN members to specialists or other providers, staff must check the online BlueHPN provider directory and remind members to select in-network providers to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs. (3) Educate clinical staff that BlueHPN members do NOT need primary care physician selection or specialist referrals, but out-of-network coverage is limited to emergency situations within BlueHPN geographic areas or any urgent/emergent care outside BlueHPN areas. (4) Verify member ID card displays 'Blue High-Performance Network' name to identify BlueHPN members. (5) Continue filing claims using existing BlueCard® procedures with the three-character member ID prefix submitted to BCBSOK. Failure to verify eligibility or direct members to in-network providers may result in claim denials and member disputes.
