Action Required

Action needed
By July 31, 2026: Billing team must update billing software to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facility) requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Add validation rules to prevent claims submission with alternative place of service codes. Update provider and billing staff training to ensure S9088 is only billed as an add-on with qualifying E/M or procedure codes when services are delivered in-person at urgent care settings. Modify encounter forms and templates to prompt providers to select place of service 20 when using these codes. Beginning August 1, 2026, all claims for S9083 and S9088 without place of service 20 will be denied by the payer. Verify your urgent care facilities are correctly coded as place of service 20 in your billing system.
