Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, HCPCS codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
By July 31, 2026: Billing team must update billing system to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facilities) validation for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system rules to automatically deny or flag claims containing these codes billed with any other place of service. Update encounter forms and provider documentation templates to require urgent care setting designation for S9083/S9088 billing. Train all billing staff and providers on the restriction. Verify that S9083 is billed as a standalone global fee and S9088 is billed only as an add-on to E/M or procedure codes. Failure to comply will result in claim denials from the payer.
