Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, procedure codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 is a global urgent care facility service, and S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
Before August 1, 2026: Billing team must update billing software to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facilities) validation for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to reject or deny claims with these codes billed to any other place of service. Update encounter templates and provider documentation reminders to ensure S9083 is only used for facility-level global urgent care services and S9088 is only appended to E/M or procedure codes when services are provided in-person at an urgent care setting. Train front-line staff and providers on the place of service requirement. After August 1, 2026, any claims with S9083 or S9088 submitted without place of service 20 will be denied, resulting in lost revenue and potential rework.
