Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, procedure codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 is a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
By July 15, 2026: Billing team must update billing system to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care) requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to deny or flag claims with these codes billed to any other place of service. Update all claim submission rules and encounter forms to require POS 20 for these codes. Educate providers and front desk staff that S9083 and S9088 are ONLY reimbursable in urgent care settings; claims billed from any other location will be denied. Verify all urgent care facility locations are properly coded as POS 20 in the system.
