Summary
Effective 8/1/2026, procedure codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 is a global urgent care facility fee, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
By July 31, 2026: Billing team must update billing system edits to enforce place of service 20 requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to reject or flag claims with these codes submitted under any other place of service (POS). Update encounter forms and provider documentation templates to require POS 20 selection when S9083 or S9088 is used. Provide training to billing staff and providers on proper coding for urgent care services. Communicate to all urgent care facility locations that these codes are now reimbursable at their facilities. Consequence: Claims billed with S9083 or S9088 under incorrect place of service will be denied by the payer.
