Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, HCPCS codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 is a global urgent care service code, and S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
By July 15, 2026: Billing team must update billing software to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facility) validation for HCPCS codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to automatically deny or flag claims with these codes billed to any other place of service. Update billing guidelines and provider documentation to specify that S9083 and S9088 are restricted to urgent care settings only. Providers and front desk staff must ensure encounter forms and claim submissions include place of service 20 when billing these codes. Communicate policy to all providers who may bill these codes. Failure to apply correct place of service will result in claim denials.
