Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, procedure codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs and must be used with an E/M or procedure code.
Action Required
By July 31, 2026: Billing team must update billing system to enforce place of service 20 (urgent care facilities) validation for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to reject or flag claims with these codes submitted under any other place of service. Update provider encounter forms and billing worksheets to clearly indicate these codes are ONLY reimbursable in urgent care settings. Train all billing staff and providers on the new restriction. Verify that S9088 is always billed as an add-on code with an accompanying E/M or procedure code. Implement pre-submission edits to prevent denials. Any claims submitted after 8/1/2026 with S9083 or S9088 using a place of service other than 20 will be denied.
