Summary
Effective August 1, 2026, HCPCS codes S9083 and S9088 become reimbursable ONLY when billed with place of service 20 (urgent care facilities). Claims submitted with any other place of service will be denied. S9083 represents a global urgent care facility service, while S9088 is an add-on code for urgent care operational costs used with E/M or procedure codes.
Action Required
By July 31, 2026: Billing team must update billing system edits to enforce place of service 20 requirement for codes S9083 and S9088. Configure system to reject or flag claims with these codes billed to any other place of service (POS). Update encounter templates and provider training materials to ensure S9083 is only used for global urgent care services and S9088 is only used as an add-on with E/M or procedure codes in urgent care settings. Add validation rules in billing software: S9083/S9088 + POS ≠ 20 = automatic denial. Communicate policy to all providers and front desk staff who schedule or bill urgent care services. Failure to implement these changes will result in automatic claim denials for non-compliant submissions.
