Summary

TRICARE is significantly restricting TENS device and supply coverage effective July 1, 2026. Coverage will be limited to acute post-operative pain treatment only. All other indications (chronic pain, neuropathy, etc.) will no longer be covered, requiring billing teams to deny or redirect claims for non-qualifying conditions.

Action Required

Action needed
By June 30, 2026: Billing team must implement coverage restrictions in billing system to automatically deny or flag TENS device and supply claims (HCPCS codes E0720, E0730, E0735, A4595, A4596) unless documentation explicitly indicates acute post-operative pain treatment. Update claim submission rules to require medical necessity documentation linking TENS use to post-operative pain management. Communicate policy change to providers and front desk staff. After July 1, 2026, any TENS claims for non-post-operative indications will be denied by TRICARE. Review pending claims projected to process after the effective date and ensure proper documentation is obtained before submission.
