Summary
Effective October 1, 2025, all GLP-1 diabetes medication prescriptions on commercial and Exchange plans must be issued by providers with eligible taxonomy codes reflecting diabetes management expertise. Claims will reject at the pharmacy if the prescribing provider's taxonomy code is not on the approved list. Providers must verify and update their taxonomy codes immediately to avoid claim denials.

DEADLINE: Immediately (by 2025-10-01 to prevent future claim rejections). REQUIREMENTS: (1) Billing team must verify that all providers in your practice who prescribe diabetes-indicated GLP-1 medications (Trulicity, Byetta, Victoza, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro) have eligible taxonomy codes from the approved list provided in the policy. (2) Identify any providers with ineligible taxonomy codes. (3) Providers must submit taxonomy code updates through standard NCPDP processes if their current code is not eligible. (4) Update internal provider credentialing records and EMR systems to flag GLP-1 prescribing providers with their current eligible/ineligible status. (5) Monitor weekly NCPDP updates (loaded by Optum Rx) to track when provider taxonomy changes are reflected in the system. (6) Alert prescribing providers that claims for GLP-1 medications will be rejected at the pharmacy if their taxonomy code does not reflect diabetes management scope of practice. CONSEQUENCES: Claims for GLP-1 medications will be rejected at point of sale/pharmacy counter for providers without eligible taxonomy codes, delaying patient access to medication and requiring claim resubmission after provider updates.
