Summary

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is introducing Coupe Health, a new PPO plan option for self-insured employers effective January 1, 2026. Billing teams must adjust patient collections procedures: for Coupe Finance plans, collect nothing at time of service (full reimbursement to provider); for Coupe Non-Finance plans, collect patient liability only after final claims processing, not upfront. No changes to claims filing, prior authorization, allowed amounts, or provider contracts.

Action Required

Action needed
By December 31, 2025: (1) Billing team must update patient collection protocols to identify Coupe Health members by logo on ID card and route to appropriate collection model. (2) For Coupe Finance model members: Configure billing system to NEVER collect patient liability at time of service; providers receive 100% reimbursement. (3) For Coupe Non-Finance model members: Update billing system to collect patient liability from remittance file ONLY after claim is fully processed, not at point of service. (4) Train front desk and billing staff on two-model distinction. (5) Update eligibility verification procedures to recognize 270/271 responses stating 'No member payment due at time of service; member responsibility reflected on final remit file.' (6) Verify claims submission remains unchanged (local claims to BCBS SC for in-state; BlueCard claims for out-of-state). Failure to adjust collection timing will result in improper patient billing and potential compliance issues. Reference Coupe Health member ID cards (marked with Coupe logo) to distinguish from standard BCBS plans.
