Summary
Aetna has classified the Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT) as experimental, investigational, or unproven for all vestibular disorder indications, effective immediately. Claims for VAT will not be covered under Aetna plans. There are no specific CPT codes for VAT; related vestibular function tests (CPT 92541-92548) may still be covered for appropriate indications, but VAT specifically is non-covered.
Action Required
Effective immediately (policy dated 2026-08-03): Billing team must update denial protocols to identify and deny all claims for Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT) under Aetna plans, citing experimental/investigational status. Update billing system edits to flag VAT claims for denial before submission. Ensure providers are notified that VAT is non-covered for vestibular disorders, vestibular migraine, and all other indications listed in CPB 0467. Related vestibular function tests (CPT 92541-92548) for other appropriate indications may still be billable—do not blanket deny all vestibular testing codes. Add internal documentation noting this policy change to prevent accidental billing. Staff should be prepared to explain to patients and providers that VAT is considered experimental and not covered under their Aetna plan.
