Summary
This is a provider notification and call-to-action from the Virginia Department of Health and American Academy of Pediatrics regarding HPV vaccination outreach. The policy emphasizes expanding HPV vaccine recommendations to ages 9-45 and implementing workflow changes such as EHR alerts, standing orders, and proactive patient recalls to increase vaccination rates. This is primarily an awareness and practice workflow initiative, not a billing policy change.
Action Required
By March 31, 2024: Providers and clinic managers (not billing team) should implement the recommended workflow changes, including: (1) Set EHR and pharmacy system notifications for HPV vaccine eligibility from ages 9-45 for all genders; (2) Identify an immunization champion at the facility; (3) Implement standing orders using resources at immunize.org; (4) Configure systems to offer same-day vaccination and leverage local pharmacies for vaccine delivery; (5) Establish proactive recall systems for patients who have not completed their HPV vaccine series. NOTE: This policy does not impose new billing requirements, coding changes, or prior authorization rules. Billing team should ensure vaccine administration codes (CPT 90471, 90472, or applicable HCPCS codes) are properly mapped in the billing system, but no immediate billing system changes are required.
