Summary
Effective October 1, 2025, all GLP-1 diabetes medications (Trulicity, Byetta, Victoza, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro) require prescribing providers to have an eligible taxonomy code reflecting diabetes management expertise. Claims will reject at the pharmacy if the provider's taxonomy does not match the approved list. Providers must verify and update their taxonomy codes immediately to avoid claim denials on commercial and Exchange plans.
Action Required
By December 31, 2025 (or immediately to prevent rejections): (1) Billing team must verify that all prescribing providers in your practice have an eligible GLP-1 taxonomy code from the published list (207RE0101X for Endocrinology/Diabetes & Metabolism is the primary code for diabetes specialists). (2) Providers must update their taxonomy codes through standard NCPDP processes if their current code is not on the approved list. (3) Verify updates are reflected in your billing system and claims processing software. (4) Communicate the approved taxonomy codes to all providers who prescribe GLP-1 medications (Trulicity, Byetta, Victoza, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro). (5) Implement a pre-claim verification process to confirm provider taxonomy eligibility before submitting GLP-1 medication claims. Consequences: Claims for diabetes-indicated GLP-1 medications will be automatically rejected at the pharmacy point of sale if the prescribing provider does not have an eligible taxonomy code, resulting in patient access delays and claim rework.
