Summary
Covis Pharma has withdrawn Makena (hydroxyprogesterone caproate injection/17-OHPC) from the market effective March 7, 2023. This medication was used to reduce preterm birth risk in pregnant women with a history of spontaneous preterm birth. Billing teams must immediately stop processing claims for this drug and update systems to reflect its unavailability.
Action Required
Immediately (retroactive to March 7, 2023): Billing team must update billing system and pharmacy records to mark Makena (HCPCS code J1726) as withdrawn/non-billable. Stop processing any new or pending claims for this drug. Notify providers and OB-GYN staff that this medication is no longer available. Update prior authorization rules to deny any requests for Makena. Educate clinical staff on alternative medications for preterm birth prevention. Any claims submitted after March 7, 2023 for Makena will be denied by the payer.
