Summary
Effective May 18, 2023, UPMC Health Plan now provides patients' Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and SNAP benefits renewal dates accessible through Provider OnLine's Eligibility view. UPMC for You-credentialed providers can access a comprehensive list of patients with upcoming renewals via the Reports tab to proactively educate patients and prevent coverage lapses. This is an informational update enabling providers to help patients manage benefit renewals through multiple channels (online COMPASS portal, phone, in-person CAO visits, or mail).
Action Required
By May 18, 2023: Billing and front desk staff should familiarize themselves with the new Provider OnLine features for accessing patient renewal dates. (1) Train staff on locating renewal dates via Eligibility view in Provider OnLine; (2) Designate team members to generate and review the patient renewal list from Reports tab (Clinical folder) monthly; (3) Create a process for front desk or patient outreach staff to proactively contact patients with upcoming Medicaid/SNAP renewals using the provided patient instructions; (4) Distribute the renewal instruction sheet to patients during visits, focusing on the four renewal options: COMPASS online portal (compass.state.pa.us), phone (1-866-550-4355), in-person CAO visits, or mail; (5) Document outreach attempts in patient records. Failure to educate patients may result in unintended coverage lapses, claim denials, and patient financial hardship.
