Summary
UPMC Health Plan has implemented a strict fax-only submission requirement for expedited appeals. All expedited appeal requests must be submitted by fax to 412-454-7920 with the Expedited Medical Necessity Appeal Request Form. Email and mail submissions will cause processing delays and may miss the required 48-hour completion window.

Immediately: Billing team must update all appeal submission procedures to route ALL expedited appeals exclusively to fax number 412-454-7920. Remove email and mail submission options from internal workflows and provider communication templates. Ensure the Expedited Medical Necessity Appeal Request Form (available on UPMC Health Plan website) is attached to every expedited appeal fax. Update billing system or appeal tracking software to document fax submission as the only acceptable method. Train all staff handling appeals on this requirement. Failure to follow this process will result in processing delays and potential denial of expedited appeals within the 48-hour timeframe.
