Summary
BCBS New Mexico is changing prior authorization requirements across multiple plan types with staggered effective dates from April to July 2026. New medical transportation codes will require prior auth through Alacura for commercial members, miscellaneous codes will be added for Medicare Advantage review, and advanced imaging codes will be added for commercial/Turquoise Care members.
Action Required
By March 31, 2026: Billing team must update eligibility verification workflow to check prior authorization requirements through Availity Essentials before rendering services. Update staff training to identify which vendor handles prior auth by plan type: Alacura for medical transportation (commercial), BCBSNM/EviCore for Medicare Advantage miscellaneous codes, and Carelon for advanced imaging (commercial/Turquoise Care). Services performed without required prior authorization may be denied and providers cannot bill patients directly.
