Summary
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network are extending the inpatient readmission review period from 14 days to 30 days for Blue Cross commercial and BCN Advantage members. Readmissions within 30 days will be reviewed and combined into a single DRG reimbursement when appropriate. BCN Advantage effective August 1, 2026; Blue Cross commercial effective September 1, 2026.

By July 15, 2026 (BCN Advantage) and August 15, 2026 (Blue Cross commercial): Billing team must update hospital billing systems and claims submission processes to flag and review all readmissions within 30 days of discharge (previously 14 days) for these Blue Cross and BCN Advantage members. Ensure claim bundling logic consolidates readmissions into a single DRG with catastrophic case payments where applicable. Update discharge summaries and clinical documentation templates to emphasize safe discharge protocols, medication reconciliation, and follow-up coordination. Train billing and clinical staff on the new 30-day review window. Failure to apply the updated review period may result in improper claim bundling, denials, or payment adjustments during Blue Cross audits.
