Summary
CMS is launching the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program (July 1, 2026 – December 31, 2027) to provide coverage for weight-loss GLP-1 medications (Foundayo, Wegovy, Zepbound) for Medicare Part D beneficiaries who don't qualify through their standard Part D plan and lack type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease. The program operates outside normal Part D coverage with a central processor handling prior authorization, claims, and pharmacy payments at a $50 member copay.
Action Required
By June 1, 2026: Providers must establish workflow for Medicare GLP-1 Bridge prior authorization submissions. (1) Train clinical staff to identify eligible patients (Medicare Part D beneficiaries without type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease who lack Part D coverage for GLP-1). (2) Update EMR/billing system with CoverMyMeds integration for electronic prior auth submission or maintain fax capability to 800-530-2404. (3) Create encounter documentation template capturing medical necessity for GLP-1 therapy per Bridge program criteria. (4) Brief front desk/patient registration staff that eligible patients will have $50 copay collected at pharmacy. (5) Maintain current contact information for CMS Bridge program updates. NOTE: This is a CMS-managed program separate from Highmark Part D plans; Highmark is providing notice only. Failure to submit proper prior auth will delay patient access to medications.
