Summary
Independence Blue Cross updated vaccine coverage criteria effective 07/01/2026 across multiple routine and non-routine vaccines, including new coverage for RSV vaccine (ages 18-59), updated pneumococcal criteria, removal of not-medically-necessary designation for SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-hu-1 monovalent vaccine, and designation of PCV13 and MenACWY-D as not eligible for reimbursement. Action Required
By 07/01/2026: Billing team must implement the following changes in the billing system: (1) Add CPT codes 90616 and 90639 to experimental/investigational category for dengue vaccine with appropriate claim edits to require medical necessity documentation; (2) Update coverage rules to deny reimbursement for PCV13 and MenACWY-D vaccines; (3) Remove the 'not medically necessary' edits for SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-hu-1 monovalent COVID-19 vaccine to allow claims; (4) Update RSV vaccine (Abrysvo, mResvia) coverage to include ages 18-49 and Arexvy to include ages 18-59 in billing system edits; (5) Verify pneumococcal vaccine criteria updates (adults 19-50 with chronic conditions, 50+ without prior vaccination history) are reflected in system logic. Update claim denial messaging and encounter forms for providers. Communicate changes to front desk and clinical staff. Failure to implement by effective date will result in incorrect claim denials or inappropriate reimbursements.
