National Drug Code (NDC) Notice: Date Change
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont·VT · Pharmacy·Pharmacy
We identified it
Jul 1, 2026
Summary
Blue Cross Vermont is delaying enforcement of National Drug Code (NDC), Unit of Measure, and Quantity billing requirements that were originally scheduled to go live on July 3, 2026. A new go-live date will be announced. Providers must prepare now to include NDC, UoM, and Quantity on professional and outpatient claims (837P, CMS 1500, 837I, UB-04 formats) when enforcement begins, as non-compliant service lines will be denied and members cannot be billed.
Action Required
IMMEDIATE: Billing team must begin auditing current claim submissions for drug services to ensure NDC, Unit of Measure, and Quantity are being reported on all professional claims (837P/CMS 1500) and outpatient/ASC/home infusion claims (837I/UB-04). Update billing software validation rules and encounter forms to require these three data elements for all drug service line items before the new enforcement date is announced. Review resources at https://www.bluecrossvt.org/providers/provider-forms-resources under "National Drug Code (NDC) Information and Resource" and the posted FAQ. Train billing staff on proper NDC, UoM, and Quantity formatting. Failure to comply will result in claim denials with no member liability, requiring corrected resubmissions. Monitor for updated go-live date announcement from Blue Cross Vermont.
