Summary
Effective July 20, 2026, KMAP (Kansas Medical Assistance Program) now requires Clinical Prior Authorization for 43 newly designated medications, including biologics, specialty pharmaceuticals, and rare disease treatments. Billing teams must implement prior authorization workflows for these drugs before the effective date to prevent claim denials for Kansas Medicaid beneficiaries.
Action Required
By July 20, 2026: Billing team must update prior authorization protocols in billing system to require Clinical Prior Authorization for all 43 listed medications including Atrasentan (Vanrafia), Avatrombopag (Doptelet), Berotralstat (Orladeyo), C1 esterase inhibitors (Cinryze, Haegarda), Emicizumab-kxwh (Hemlibra), Fitusiran (Qfitlia), Lanadelumab-flyo (Takhzyro), and all other medications listed in KMAP Bulletin 26109. Immediately: (1) Review medication list and cross-reference with current patient prescriptions and claims; (2) Update billing software configuration to flag these medications for prior auth submission before processing; (3) Notify providers and clinical staff of new requirements; (4) Create internal checklist of affected medications for front-desk and billing staff. Before July 20, 2026: Coordinate with KanCare MCO plan implementations (note: MCO implementation dates may vary from state policy date per KanCare Open Claims Resolution Log). Consequences: Claims submitted without required prior authorization will be denied. Note: Implementation timeline may vary by MCO; verify specific go-live dates with each KanCare plan.
