Summary
The Minnesota Department of Human Services has issued a fraud alert regarding unauthorized phone calls impersonating DHS staff requesting enrollment and private health information under the guise of revalidation. Billing and administrative staff must immediately educate themselves and providers on this scam, verify caller identity through official channels (651-431-2700), and never provide sensitive information over unsolicited calls. Legitimate revalidation requests will be in writing and will not solicit patient/recipient data over the phone.
Action Required
Immediately: (1) Billing team and front desk staff must review this fraud alert and understand the scam indicators. (2) Providers must be notified via email or staff meeting about this alert, emphasizing that DHS will never request patient/recipient information by phone. (3) All staff must verify any inbound calls claiming to be from DHS Provider Resource Center by hanging up and calling the official number 651-431-2700 before providing any information. (4) Document and report any suspicious calls requesting enrollment or health information to both the DHS Provider Resource Center (651-431-2700) and internal compliance/security teams. (5) Update office protocols to prohibit sharing of enrollment details or PHI over unsolicited phone calls. Failure to prevent information disclosure could result in data breaches, fraud losses, and regulatory penalties.
