Summary
Kansas Medicaid (KMAP) has established a new drug shortage protocol effective December 1, 2023. When pharmacies cannot obtain preferred drugs due to shortages, providers must check the Drug Shortage Log and either complete a Drug Shortage Form or request a prior authorization depending on whether the shortage is listed.
Action Required
Immediately: Pharmacy staff must bookmark the KMAP Drug Shortage Log on the Kansas Medical Assistance Program Public Portal. When drug shortages occur, first check if the shortage is listed on the log. If not listed, complete the Drug Shortage Form and fax with documentation of inability to obtain the product. If listed, contact Prior Authorizations to create a PA for the requested drug. Save pharmacy helpdesk numbers: Aetna (844-234-8268), Sunflower (877-644-4623), United Healthcare (877-305-8952), KMAP (800-933-6593).
