Summary
AHCCCS has updated their January 2026 Claims Clues newsletter clarifying that hospitals (provider type 02) do not need prior authorization for Federal Emergency Services (FES) inpatient stays, and emergency services are prohibited from requiring prior authorization per federal law. The update also includes new CPT/HCPCS code sets and common billing error reminders.
Action Required
Immediately: Hospital billing teams must stop submitting prior authorization requests for Federal Emergency Services (FES) inpatient stays for provider type 02 hospitals and all emergency services. Update billing workflows to remove PA requirements for these services. Review and implement updated January 2026 CPT/HCPCS code sets in billing systems. Verify all referring/ordering providers are registered with AHCCCS to avoid claim denials with edits L208.1 and L232.4.
