Summary
Effective April 1, 2004, Illinois Medicaid will accept CLIA waived lab codes with QW modifier and will no longer accept CPT 86588 for rapid strep tests. Rapid strep tests must be billed using CPT 87880 with QW modifier instead.
Action Required
By April 1, 2004: Billing team must update billing system to reject CPT 86588 for rapid streptococcal tests and replace with CPT 87880 plus QW modifier. Update encounter forms and lab procedures to include QW modifier for all CLIA waived tests. Add CLIA waived lab codes from CMS website to billing system. Claims with CPT 86588 after April 1, 2004 will be rejected.
