Summary
Federal law requires all non-electronic Medicaid prescriptions to be written on tamper-resistant prescription pads starting October 1, 2007. Electronic prescriptions (phone, fax, e-prescribing) are exempt from this requirement.
Action Required
By October 1, 2007: All providers must use tamper-resistant prescription pads for handwritten Medicaid prescriptions or switch to electronic prescribing methods (phone, fax, e-prescribing). Update prescription pad inventory to meet federal tamper-resistant requirements. Electronic prescriptions are strongly encouraged to avoid compliance issues.
