Summary

Starting May 1, 2008, hospitals must submit Present on Admission (POA) indicators for all principal and secondary diagnosis codes on inpatient claims to Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). This mirrors Medicare requirements and applies to all inpatient hospital services except hospice care.

Action needed
By May 1, 2008: Hospital billing teams must update systems to include POA indicators (Y, N, U, W, or 1) for all principal and secondary diagnosis codes on inpatient claims. Update UB-04 forms to report POA in the eighth digit of FL67 fields and configure 837I transactions to include POA data in Loop 2300, K3 segment. Note: Claims will not be rejected for missing POA indicators but will receive informational message I18.
