Summary
Federal Economic Stimulus Payments (tax rebates) received by long-term care facility residents are exempt from Medicaid asset calculations for 3 months from receipt. After 3 months, any remaining amount counts toward the $2,000 asset limit, and facilities must notify residents if their total assets reach $1,800 or more.
Action Required
Immediately: Long-term care facilities should assist residents with filing 2007 tax returns to receive rebates. Track stimulus payment receipt dates and monitor resident accounts. When stimulus funds plus resident assets total $1,800 or more after 3 months, notify residents per 89 Illinois Administrative Code 140.518(g).
