Summary
Illinois Medicaid is eliminating the one-digit payee code for institutional claims, requiring providers to use NPI numbers instead. There's a transition period from August 1, 2009 to December 1, 2009, after which claims using the old payee code will be rejected.
Action Required
Before December 1, 2009: Institutional providers must register their NPI for each 16-digit HFS payee number through MEDI Web site, illinoisnpi.com, or by fax/mail to Provider Participation Unit. Update billing systems to use Pay-To Provider NPI in Loop 2010AB, NM109 for 837I/DDE claims and Form Locator 02, Line 4 for UB04 paper claims. Claims will be rejected after December 1, 2009 if payee cannot be derived from NPI.
