Summary
Illinois HFS will no longer automatically convert Medicare residents' Category of Service codes from COS 72 (Medicare Coinsurance) to Medicaid codes (COS 70/71) on the date of death. The resident's COS will remain as Medicare (COS 72) for the death date when processed after February 15, 2011.
Action Required
Immediately: Nursing facility billing teams in Illinois must update billing procedures to ensure Medicare residents who die remain coded as COS 72 (Medicare Coinsurance) for their date of death instead of converting to Medicaid COS codes. Review and adjust any automated billing systems that previously expected this conversion. Submit resident status change notifications within 5 working days per Illinois Administrative Code 140.513.
