Summary
Illinois is implementing a Medicaid Emergency Psychiatric Demonstration Program effective December 17, 2012, allowing certain psychiatric hospitals to receive Medicaid payment for emergency services to participants ages 21-64 in psychiatric crisis. Hospitals must verify patient eligibility through the MEDI system and contact designated case managers before admissions.
Action Required
Before December 17, 2012: For all psychiatric emergency admissions, billing team and hospital staff must check patient eligibility through the MEDI system immediately upon patient presentation. If patient is in a 60-day treatment span, contact the applicable Targeted Case Management entity using the telephone number provided in MEDI before contacting the Quality Improvement Organization. Update admission workflows to include MEDI verification as first step for psychiatric crisis cases.
