Summary
Prior approval is no longer required for binaural hearing aids effective April 14, 2014. However, if a provider dispensed a monaural hearing aid during the prior approval period (February 15 - April 13, 2014) and now wants to dispense a second monaural aid, prior approval is still required to prevent duplicate service rejections.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team should verify no prior authorization is needed for binaural hearing aid claims with dates of service April 14, 2014 and after. For patients who received monaural hearing aids between February 15 - April 13, 2014, obtain prior approval before dispensing a second monaural aid to prevent duplicate service claim rejections. Providers must continue documenting medical necessity in patient records.
