Summary
Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services will continue requiring the GT modifier on all professional telehealth claims (unlike CMS which eliminated this requirement). Additionally, they're relaxing physical presence requirements - physicians no longer need to be physically present during all telehealth services, with specific rules for telemedicine vs telepsychiatry.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must continue using GT modifier on all telehealth professional claims submitted to Illinois Medicaid (do not follow CMS guidance that eliminated this requirement). Update billing system rules to ensure GT modifier is automatically appended to telehealth services for Illinois Medicaid patients. Review telemedicine and telepsychiatry protocols to ensure compliance with new physical presence requirements.
