The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services is alerting providers about fraudulent prescription requests being faxed by criminals posing as pharmacists, targeting expensive topical creams, lidocaine, diabetic supplies, and other medications. Providers must carefully verify ALL faxed prescription requests for validity before processing.

Immediately: All clinical and billing staff must verify the legitimacy of ANY faxed prescription requests before processing. Check pharmacy phone numbers against known fraudulent numbers (800-581-1299, 866-705-4069, 866-462-7769, 561-331-6061, 800-868-8136, 866-242-5573, 866-308-4144, 866-583-0576, 888-641-0060, 888-290-8812). Establish verification protocols to contact pharmacies directly using independently obtained phone numbers. Report suspicious requests to HFS.OIG.fraudhotline@illinois.gov or local FBI Field Office.
